Transient third nerve palsy after electrometallicthrombosis of carotid cavernous fistulae.
Three patients had oculomotor nerve palsy as a complication of the treatment of carotid cavernous fistulae by electrometallicthrombosis of the cavernous sinus. In two, third nerve function returned without misdirection in two months or less. One was left with a partial third nerve palsy, also without misdirection.
متن کاملPosterior-draining dural carotid cavernous fistulae: a possible cause of computed tomographic angiography negative isolated third nerve palsy
Computed tomographic angiography (CTA) is a well-established non-invasive investigation for this neurological presentation to exclude intracranial aneurysms. However, dural arteriovenous fistulae with anterograde venous drainage only can be missed by CTA. Here we reported two patients with painful complete third nerve palsy and dural carotid cavernous fistulae with anterograde venous drainage o...

The incidence of visual failure with carotid-cavernous fistula is high. It was impaired in 89 per cent. of the cases studied by de Schweinitz and Holloway (I908) and in 73 per cent. of those studied by Sattler (I920). The latter recorded blindness or near blindness in almost half of his patients. Treatment has reflected a clinical preoccupation with elimination of the bruit and reduction of the...

We describe an unconventional endovascular approach to the treatment of traumatic carotid-cavernous fistulas. Four patients with large high-flow shunts have been successfully treated by trapping of the fistula by using a combination of proximal balloon occlusion and distal coil embolization. The latter was achieved following retrograde catheterization of the distal parent vessel via the contral...
متن کاملAlcohol embolization of carotid-cavernous indirect fistulae.
OBJECTIVE Carotid-cavernous fistulae (CCFs) are abnormal communications between the carotid artery and cavernous sinus that may present with rapid visual deterioration and extraocular paresis as a result of increasing intraocular pressure requiring emergent treatment to preserve vision. We present a technique of balloon-assisted ethanol embolization of the cavernous carotid artery supply to ind...
